Cockerell's grape leafhopper

Dikrella cockerellii

Description

Dikrella cockerellii, commonly known as Cockerell's grape leafhopper, belongs to the family Cicadellidae within the order Hemiptera. It is a specialized pest that primarily affects grapevines. These insects are characterized by their small size and ability to migrate rapidly across vineyards, making them a recurring challenge for viticulturists in temperate and warm climate regions.

The primary host for this species is Vitis vinifera. The insects feed by inserting their stylets into the leaf tissue and extracting cell contents, specifically the sap. While they have a strong affinity for grapevines, their population dynamics can be influenced by the presence of surrounding vegetation that serves as an alternative food source or refuge during the winter months.

The lifecycle of Dikrella cockerellii consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Adults typically overwinter in sheltered locations, such as leaf litter, debris, or under the loose bark of older grapevine trunks. As temperatures rise in the spring, they emerge to mate and lay eggs within the leaf veins or petiole tissues. Multiple overlapping generations per year often result in high pest pressure during the growing season.

The damage caused by these leafhoppers is easily identifiable by the appearance of stippling or bleaching on the leaves. As feeding continues, these spots coalesce, leading to severe chlorosis and, in extreme cases, leaf abscission. This reduction in photosynthetic surface area limits the vine's ability to produce sugars, ultimately decreasing berry quality and weakening the overall vigor of the plant for the following season.

To effectively manage populations, a multi-faceted approach is required:

  • Applying systemic insecticides during early spring to target emerging nymphs.
  • Sanitizing the vineyard by removing leaf debris to reduce overwintering sites.
  • Utilizing yellow sticky traps for monitoring flight activity and population density.
  • Encouraging natural predators such as lacewings and parasitic wasps in the vineyard.
  • Implementing canopy management techniques to increase airflow and reduce favorable microclimates for the pest.
