Costa Lima Sharpshooter

Systematic position. This insect belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. Dilobopterus costalimai is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, primarily known for its efficiency in transmitting plant pathogens that severely impact orchard productivity and long-term tree health.

Affected crops and damage. The pest predominantly targets citrus plantations, posing a major risk to orange production. It is a highly efficient vector of Xylella fastidiosa, a bacterium responsible for variegated chlorosis in citrus and other systemic diseases. The economic damage is primarily caused by the decline of tree vitality and reduced fruit quality.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg, nymph (five instars), and adult stages. Females typically lay eggs within the leaf tissue, which provides nourishment and protection for the developing nymphs. Both nymphs and adults feed on xylem sap, which requires a specialized physiological adaptation to handle the low nutrient content of the fluid.

Nature of damage. Damage is caused both by the direct removal of xylem sap and, more critically, by the inoculation of bacterial pathogens into the vascular system of the host plant. The restricted flow of water and minerals caused by these bacteria results in leaf yellowing, stunting of branches, and a general decline, eventually leading to the death of the tree if left untreated.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this sharpshooter, as single methods are rarely sufficient. Key tactics include:

• Regular monitoring using yellow sticky traps to track population spikes.
• Application of systemic insecticides to disrupt the transmission of pathogens.
• Pruning of infected or symptomatic branches to slow the spread of the disease.
• Management of alternative hosts, including weeds and surrounding vegetation, to break the pest's reproductive cycle.
