Systematic position: The genus Diocalandra belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. These weevils are significant pests of palms, recognized for their ability to infest and compromise the structural integrity of various palm species in tropical and subtropical environments.

Host plants: The primary hosts include economically important species like the coconut palm (Cocos nucifera) and date palm (Phoenix dactylifera), as well as numerous ornamental palm varieties used in landscaping and residential garden settings.

Biology and lifecycle: Female weevils oviposit eggs in the crevices of the trunk, leaf bases, or existing wounds of the palm. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel into the host's soft tissue to feed. The entire larval and pupal stages occur within the plant, making this pest particularly difficult to detect in its early stages.

Nature of damage and harm: The larvae cause extensive damage by creating tunnels inside the stem and petioles, disrupting vascular flow and nutrient transport. Symptoms include general wilting, yellowing of fronds, and the exudation of sap from entry holes. Severe infestations often lead to crown collapse and the death of the palm tree.
