Diodora is a genus of sea snails within the family Fissurellidae, commonly known as keyhole limpets. It is a critical distinction to note that these organisms are strictly marine-dwelling and do not pose any threat to terrestrial agricultural crops or greenhouse plants. They inhabit rocky substrates in intertidal and subtidal zones of oceans worldwide.
Taxonomically, Diodora belongs to the order Lepetellida. Their most distinct characteristic is a small hole at the apex of their conical shell, which allows for the efficient discharge of water after it has passed over their gills. Unlike garden snails or slugs that feed on vegetation, these limpets rely on scraping algae and organic debris off rocks.
Regarding their biology, these mollusks go through a larval stage in the plankton before settling onto a hard substrate to spend their adult lives. They do not possess the physiological adaptations to survive on land or in soil environments, which eliminates any possibility of them becoming a field pest for crops like cereals, vegetables, or fruits.
