Description
Systematic position. This pest belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Miridae. Dionconotus cruentatus is a specialized phytophagous insect that, under favorable environmental conditions, can significantly impact the productivity of agricultural areas, particularly in southern European regions.
Host crops. The mirid bug shows a preference for cereal crops, though it can also feed on various wild grasses. The greatest economic damage is caused to wheat, barley, and oat crops, as the insects feed on the sap of vegetative organs during the active growth period and ear formation.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of the bug is closely linked to the phenology of cereal grasses. Typically, they overwinter as eggs laid within plant tissues or the soil substrate. In the spring, once temperatures become favorable, nymphs emerge and undergo several molting stages, eventually developing into adults (imagines). Usually, one generation develops per season.
Damage characteristics. Adult bugs and nymphs use their piercing-sucking mouthparts to feed on plant sap. Feeding sites often become discolored, leaves turn yellow and curl, and severe infestations lead to stunted growth and withering of the ears. This results in the formation of shriveled grains and a significant reduction in overall yield.
Control measures. Managing this pest requires an integrated approach. Key strategies include crop rotation, the elimination of weeds along field margins, and timely application of systemic or contact insecticides during the period of peak nymphal emergence. Regular field monitoring is recommended to determine the economic injury level.
