Dione is a genus of butterflies within the Nymphalidae family. In agricultural settings, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions where passion fruit (Passiflora) is cultivated, certain species of this genus are recognized as significant pests due to the larvae's highly specialized feeding habits on these host plants.

Taxonomically, the genus belongs to the order Lepidoptera, family Nymphalidae, and subfamily Heliconiinae. The larvae are known for their ability to sequester plant toxins, making them unpalatable to many predators while allowing them to thrive on host plants that might otherwise be chemically defended against generalist herbivores.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis consisting of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on the leaves or stems. Upon hatching, the larvae begin to feed immediately. As they grow through several instars, their consumption rate increases significantly, leading to rapid biomass loss in the host plants during the final larval stages.

The damage caused by Dione larvae primarily involves extensive defoliation. The larvae feed on the leaf blade, often leaving only the major veins intact. This significant reduction in leaf surface area negatively affects the plant's photosynthetic capacity, which directly results in reduced growth rates, stunted fruit development, and lower crop yields.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for controlling Dione infestations. Key strategies include:

  • Field scouting to identify early-stage egg clusters and larvae.
  • Application of biological control agents, such as Bacillus thuringiensis.
  • Encouraging natural biological control by conserving predator populations.
  • Selective use of systemic or contact insecticides when monitoring data indicates that the population has crossed the economic threshold.
