Description
The stalk-eyed fly (Diopsis) belongs to the order Diptera, family Diopsidae. These insects are easily recognized by their highly specialized anatomy, featuring prominent lateral extensions of the head with eyes located at the tips. They are primarily distributed throughout the tropical regions of Africa and parts of Southeast Asia, where they pose a significant threat to agriculture.
The primary host plant for this pest is rice (Oryza sativa). The damage is mainly caused by the larvae, which feed on the internal tissues of the stems. While rice is the most economically significant host, these flies are also capable of developing on various wild grasses, which often act as alternative hosts throughout the growing season.
The life cycle of the stalk-eyed fly consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs on the leaves of young rice plants. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the stems. The environmental conditions, particularly humidity and temperature, play a crucial role in the speed of the fly's development and the overall population density.
The most visible sign of infestation is the «dead heart» symptom, where the central shoot of the rice plant turns yellow and dies. This damage prevents the plant from developing a productive panicle. Severe infestations can lead to significant yield losses, as the damaged tillers fail to produce grain, directly impacting the economic output of the farm.
