Diospilus

Diospilus is a genus of parasitic wasps belonging to the family Braconidae, order Hymenoptera. While many braconids are beneficial parasitoids, species within the genus Diospilus have been identified as pests of certain crops, particularly those belonging to the Brassicaceae family, where they act as internal feeders on seeds.

These pests primarily target rapeseed, mustard, and related cruciferous crops. The damage is localized within the pods of the plants. Due to the cryptic nature of the larvae, infestations often go unnoticed until significant damage to the seed yield has already occurred within the field.

The biology of the pest is synchronized with the phenology of the host plant. The female wasp deposits eggs into the developing pods. Upon hatching, the larvae feed on the ripening seeds inside. This internal feeding pattern allows the insect to develop protected from external environmental factors and many contact insecticides.

The economic harm caused by Diospilus includes direct yield loss, reduced seed quality, and increased susceptibility to secondary fungal pathogens. Heavily infested pods often show signs of premature ripening or splitting, leading to shattering and further losses during the harvest process.

Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach. Cultural practices such as crop rotation and deep plowing can disrupt the life cycle by destroying overwintering sites. Monitoring with pheromone or sticky traps during the flowering and pod-setting stages is essential for timing insecticide applications accurately.

Chemical control should be applied strictly during the adult stage before oviposition occurs. Because larvae are protected inside the pods, post-infestation spraying is largely ineffective. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies, which preserve natural predators, are recommended to maintain long-term balance in the agroecosystem.
