The cabbage seed weevil, scientifically known as Diospilus oleraceus, belongs to the order Hymenoptera and the family Braconidae. Despite the family's general reputation for containing beneficial parasitoids, this specific species is recognized as a significant pest that targets the reproductive structures of various cruciferous plants, impacting seed production quality.

Host plants
This pest primarily infests plants within the Brassicaceae family. It is a common threat to major agricultural crops, including various types of cabbage, rapeseed, radish, mustard, swede, and turnip. It is particularly devastating for seed-producing fields where the loss of flowers directly results in yield reduction.

Biology and life cycle
The life cycle of Diospilus oleraceus is closely synchronized with the flowering phenology of host plants. Females deposit their eggs inside the buds or ovaries. The larvae feed internally on the floral tissues, destroying the potential seeds. Pupation typically occurs in the soil, where the insect remains in a cocoon to overwinter until the favorable conditions of the next spring.

Damage is characterized by the deformation and premature drop of flower buds, as well as the destruction of seeds within the pods. This leads to a marked decrease in seed yield and viability.
