Description
The walnut leaf mite (Diptacus gigantorhynchus) belongs to the family Eriophyidae. These are extremely small, vermiform mites that primarily infest walnut trees (Juglans regia), causing significant damage to foliage and potential yield loss in orchards.
These mites are ectoparasites that feed on the surface cells of leaves and petioles. Their mouthparts are specially adapted for piercing and sucking fluids, which causes localized cell death and disruption of photosynthesis in the host plant.
