Description

The Nutmeg moth (Discestra trifolii) is a member of the Noctuidae family within the order Lepidoptera. This moth is recognized as a significant agricultural pest due to its polyphagous nature. The adult moths are characterized by grayish-brown forewings with a mottled appearance, allowing them to blend seamlessly into their natural habitat, making them difficult to detect during daylight hours.

The larvae, commonly known as cutworms or caterpillars, feed on a wide range of host plants. Major affected crops include various legumes such as clover, alfalfa, and peas, as well as crucifers, sugar beets, and potato crops. Effective control measures require an integrated approach. Cultural practices, such as deep autumn plowing, help to disrupt the pupal stage and reduce the emerging population the following year. Regular field scouting is essential to determine the infestation levels. If populations exceed economic thresholds, the application of selective insecticides or biological control agents, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, can be highly effective.
