The Carolina grasshopper (Dissosteira carolina) is a member of the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. Commonly found throughout North America, it is a prominent grasshopper species known for its camouflage abilities and potential to become a localized agricultural pest when environmental conditions favor rapid population growth.
This species is a generalist feeder that impacts a wide array of crops. Primary agricultural targets include cereal crops like wheat, corn, oats, and barley. Furthermore, the pest causes damage to forage crops, legumes, and various vegetables in garden or farm settings, often consuming significant portions of the plant biomass during an outbreak.
The life cycle of the Carolina grasshopper follows a pattern of incomplete metamorphosis. Females deposit eggs in the soil in late summer, where the eggs overwinter. In the spring, nymphs emerge and progress through several instars, growing larger and developing wing pads before transitioning into flight-capable adults. Their activity peak is usually observed in the late summer months.
Damage is characterized by irregular chewing of leaves, stems, and sometimes reproductive structures of the plant. High densities of grasshoppers can lead to complete defoliation, severely stressing the crops and reducing overall yield quality and quantity. In severe cases, the damage to the apical meristem can prevent the plant from continuing its growth cycle.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural controls, such as deep tillage to destroy egg pods in the soil, are highly recommended to reduce future populations. When damage thresholds are exceeded, chemical control using registered insecticides is necessary to protect the crop. Regular field scouting and monitoring of nymph populations are essential to time treatments effectively and minimize economic loss.
