Description

The Moroccan locust (Dociostaurus maroccanus) is a significant member of the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. It is recognized globally as one of the most destructive agricultural pests, capable of forming massive swarms that can devastate agricultural productivity across vast territories.

This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide range of plants. It heavily attacks cereals such as wheat and barley, corn, legumes, sunflower, and sugar beet. Furthermore, it causes significant damage to pasture grasses and can strip vegetable gardens and orchards bare if not managed effectively.

The biological cycle of the locust progresses through three primary stages: egg, nymph (hopper), and adult. Eggs are laid in the soil in clusters known as egg pods, typically found in undisturbed, compacted ground. Nymphs pass through five instars before reaching the adult winged stage, at which point they become highly mobile and prone to long-distance migration.

Damage caused by the Moroccan locust is characterized by extensive defoliation. Nymphs and adults feed aggressively on the aerial parts of plants. During outbreaks, the sheer number of insects can result in total crop failure, leading to severe economic losses and food insecurity in affected agricultural regions.

Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:

  • Mechanical control through deep tillage of infested areas to destroy egg pods.
  • Early detection via field monitoring during the spring to identify hopper bands.
  • Timely chemical control using registered insecticides when populations exceed economic injury levels.
  • Utilization of biological control agents to mitigate ecological impact while managing the insect density.
