Description
The Moroccan locust (Dociostaurus maroccanus) is a member of the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. It is recognized as one of the most serious agricultural pests worldwide, known for its gregarious behavior and the ability to form massive swarms that can devastate vast areas of vegetation.
This pest is highly polyphagous and feeds on a wide variety of crops. It causes significant damage to cereals such as wheat and barley, as well as maize, sunflowers, legumes, and vegetable crops. In addition to cultivated lands, it severely degrades pastures and rangelands, impacting livestock production.
The life cycle involves an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and an adult stage. Eggs overwinter in egg pods buried in the soil. Upon the arrival of favorable spring temperatures, the nymphs hatch and begin feeding aggressively. As they progress through their instars, they aggregate into dense bands, eventually molting into the migratory adult form.
Damage is characterized by the consumption of all green plant parts, including leaves, stems, and grains. In the swarming phase, the locust's insatiable appetite can lead to total crop failure. The economic impact is profound, as the rapid destruction of crops often leaves farmers with little time to respond once a swarm has descended.
