Plotnikov's Locust

Plotnikov's locust (Dociostaurus plotnikovi) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. As a gregarious species, it has the potential for massive population outbreaks, forming large bands of larvae and swarms of adults that can devastatingly affect agriculture over vast territories.

This pest is highly polyphagous and feeds on a wide range of crops. Primary targets include cereals such as wheat and barley, legumes, and industrial crops like cotton. Furthermore, this insect causes severe economic loss by destroying grazing lands and pastures, depleting essential fodder resources for livestock.

The biological cycle of this locust involves one generation per year. The insect overwinters in the egg stage, with females depositing egg pods in the soil, favoring undisturbed or firm ground. Larvae emerge in the spring following stable temperature increases. They pass through five instar stages, gradually developing into winged adults capable of migrating over significant distances.

The damage caused is characterized by the intensive consumption of plant tissue. Younger larvae skeletonize the leaves, while older nymphs and adults consume entire leaves, stems, and reproductive organs. Under high-density conditions, the feeding activity can lead to complete defoliation, leaving fields barren and causing total crop failure in extreme cases.

Managing Plotnikov's locust requires an integrated approach. Cultural control methods, such as deep tillage or disc harrowing of egg-laying sites, are crucial to destroy the egg pods before hatching. When pest populations exceed economic thresholds, chemical control using targeted insecticides remains the most reliable method for protecting commercial crops and maintaining yield safety.
