The Bobolink (lat. Dolichonyx oryzivorus) is a passerine bird species within the Icteridae family. While commonly regarded as a migratory songbird, in specific agricultural contexts, it acts as a significant pest of cereal crops, particularly rice, during its seasonal movements between North and South America.

The primary crops susceptible to damage by the Bobolink include rice, millet, and sorghum. The species displays a specific preference for seeds in the milk and dough stages of maturity. Because they travel in extremely large flocks, a single encounter can result in the loss of a significant percentage of a crop field's yield within a few days.

Regarding their biology, the Bobolink undergoes one of the longest migrations of any songbird. Their lifecycle requires them to accumulate high fat reserves before long-distance flights. This biological drive leads them to forage intensely on grain fields that provide the high-caloric content necessary for their survival during transit.

The damage caused is direct and severe. By feeding on the grain from the panicles, they deplete the harvest yield. Furthermore, the weight and physical activity of the birds cause the stalks to collapse, leading to lodging. This structural damage facilitates rot and prevents the efficient use of mechanical harvesting machinery.

Protecting crops against the Bobolink requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy focused on deterrence. Growers utilize a mix of tactical measures:

  • installing automated propane cannons or sound emitters;
  • using reflective visual deterrents to disrupt foraging;
  • timing planting cycles to avoid peak migration windows;
  • implementing physical barriers or protective netting in smaller, high-value fields.
