Tree wasp

The tree wasp (Latin: Dolichovespula sylvestris) is a species of social wasp belonging to the family Vespidae. They are known for constructing intricate, spherical paper nests, often attached to the branches of trees or shrubs. Due to their ability to inhabit garden environments, they are frequently encountered by fruit growers and orchard managers.

These insects are considered agricultural pests primarily because they feed on the juice of ripening fruits. Crops such as grapes, apples, pears, and plums are highly susceptible to their damage. By piercing the skin of the fruit, tree wasps create entry points for secondary pests, such as fruit flies, and promote the growth of mold and decay-causing fungi.

The biology of the tree wasp follows a clear seasonal pattern. A queen emerges from hibernation in early spring to establish a new colony. The worker population expands throughout the summer, reaching peak numbers in late July and August. This timeframe is critical, as it aligns with the maturation period of many late-summer fruit varieties.

The economic impact is manifested not only through direct crop loss but also through the hazards posed to workers during harvest. Being highly territorial, tree wasps can pose a significant stinging risk to personnel working in orchards or vineyards, often requiring specialized professional intervention for nest removal in high-traffic areas.
