Dorylaimus stagnalis is a species of soil-dwelling nematode belonging to the order Dorylaimida and the family Dorylaimidae. While many members of this order are predators of other soil microorganisms, some can exhibit herbivorous tendencies, affecting the integrity of plant roots in specific water-logged or organic-rich environments.

This species is predominantly found in aquatic or semi-aquatic habitats and saturated soils. Their presence in agricultural fields is often correlated with poor drainage or excessive irrigation, which creates a favorable microclimate for their reproduction and active movement through soil capillaries.

The biology of Dorylaimus stagnalis is characterized by a specialized feeding apparatus known as an odontostyle. This spear-like structure is used for nutrient intake and, in cases of opportunistic feeding, can penetrate plant cells, causing structural damage to the root epidermis and facilitating the entry of secondary bacterial and fungal pathogens.
