Systematic position: Dosima (Dosima fascicularis) belongs to the phylum Arthropoda, subphylum Crustacea, class Maxillopoda, order Cirripedia, and family Lepadidae. Unlike most of its relatives, this species maintains a pelagic lifestyle, attaching itself to drifting objects floating in the water column.

Crops affected: This organism is not a pest of terrestrial agricultural crops. However, Dosima poses a significant threat to marine aquaculture operations by colonizing net pens, floating collars, and technical equipment used for farming mollusks, seaweed, and various marine organisms.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle of Dosima includes a free-swimming nauplius larval stage, which undergoes several molts before reaching the cyprid stage. The cyprid larvae settle on a floating substrate and attach using a specialized cement secretion, eventually developing a characteristic foam-like float that allows the colony to remain buoyant at the surface.

Character of damage and harm: The primary economic damage results from dense biofouling on hydraulic structures and aquaculture equipment. This accumulation increases drag and weight on installations, accelerating structural wear. In aquaculture, excessive colony development inhibits water flow through nets, severely impacting oxygen levels and environmental quality for the cultivated species.

Control measures: Management of Dosima is focused on anti-fouling strategies. Operators utilize specialized anti-fouling coatings containing copper oxides or eco-friendly silicone-based polymers. Additionally, regular mechanical cleaning of nets and routine inspections of floating farming equipment during peak spawning seasons are essential for maintaining facility integrity.
