Systematic position. Draeculacephala noveboracensis is a species of leafhopper belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is a common insect pest that thrives in moist habitats, including grasslands, wetlands, and agricultural landscapes where humidity levels are high.

Host plants and economic impact. The pest primarily targets members of the Poaceae (grass) family. Economically significant crops, including wheat, barley, oats, and maize, are susceptible to infestation. Beyond the physical damage caused by sap extraction, these leafhoppers are known vectors for various plant pathogens that cause systemic diseases.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Depending on the geographical latitude and environmental temperature, the species can produce one or multiple generations per year. The overwintering usually occurs at the egg stage, with eggs embedded in the plant tissue of host grasses.

Nature of damage. Infestation results in chlorosis (yellowing of leaves), stunting of plant growth, and sometimes total wilting. The feeding activity disrupts nutrient flow, leading to localized spotting and necrosis. A high population density during the early development stages of cereals can cause severe economic losses and reduced yield potential.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling Draeculacephala noveboracensis. Key strategies include:

• Removal of wild grass hosts and weeds around field margins.
• Monitoring pest populations using yellow sticky traps.
• Timing insecticide applications to coincide with the most vulnerable nymphal stages.
• Promoting biological control through the preservation of natural predators in the field.
