Dreissena is a genus of freshwater bivalve mollusks belonging to the family Dreissenidae and the order Myoida. Often referred to as zebra mussels, these organisms are highly successful invasive species. They are characterized by their ability to attach firmly to hard surfaces using byssal threads, allowing them to thrive in varied aquatic environments.
In an agricultural context, Dreissena is a major technical pest affecting irrigation and water management infrastructure. They do not feed on crops directly, but they target the lifeblood of modern farming: water supply systems. By colonizing pipes, pumps, and irrigation canals, they create substantial logistical and mechanical challenges for growers.
The biological life cycle of Dreissena includes a free-swimming larval stage known as a veliger. These microscopic larvae can easily penetrate filtration systems and enter the irrigation network. Once they settle on a suitable surface, they undergo metamorphosis and grow into adult mussels, creating large, calcified structures that are difficult to remove.
The primary damage caused by these mollusks is biofouling. A heavy infestation of Dreissena can restrict water flow in pipes by up to 50% or more, leading to pump pressure surges, pipe blockages, and total system failure. This creates significant risks for crops that require precise irrigation schedules, often leading to water stress or crop loss due to technical downtime.
Effective management and control methods include:
- Mechanical removal through pigging and high-pressure cleaning of pipes.
- Installation of fine-mesh filtration to intercept veligers at water intake points.
- Applying chemical oxidants or molluscicides during the spawning season.
