Drino sociabilis

Drino sociabilis is a parasitic fly belonging to the family Tachinidae and the order Diptera. This species is widely recognized in agricultural research for its role as a parasitoid of various lepidopteran larvae. By regulating the populations of harmful caterpillars that feed on crops, it serves as a valuable component of integrated pest management (IPM) systems in agricultural landscapes.

The host range of Drino sociabilis is primarily focused on caterpillars of moths and butterflies that inflict economic damage on vegetables, fruits, and field crops. As a larval endoparasitoid, the fly effectively reduces pest density, acting as a natural biotic factor that prevents outbreaks of defoliating insects which would otherwise threaten yield stability.

This process eventually kills the host, after which the fly larva pupates, often in the soil, before emerging as an adult to continue its reproductive cycle.

While the larvae act as internal parasites, the adults play a role in pollination and ecosystem balance by visiting flowering plants for nectar. Their presence in agricultural fields is generally considered beneficial. Identifying Drino sociabilis is critical for agronomists, as it distinguishes between harmful insect activity and natural pest control processes occurring within the crop canopy.

To preserve populations of Drino sociabilis, agricultural practices must favor the maintenance of beneficial insect habitats. This includes reducing the use of broad-spectrum pesticides that may harm non-target parasitoids.
