Dynamis

Dynamis is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Curculionidae (weevils). Within the agricultural sector, the most significant species is Dynamis borassi, which is widely recognized as a major pest affecting various palm species, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions.

The host plants for this pest include coconut palms, oil palms, and several ornamental palm varieties. The beetles target the most vulnerable parts of the tree, primarily the apical bud or the crown, which are essential for the vertical growth and survival of the plant.

The life cycle involves an egg, larval, pupal, and adult stage. Adult females lay eggs in small holes bored into the plant tissues. Once hatched, the larvae feed extensively on the inner tissues of the palm, creating deep, damaging tunnels that weaken the structural integrity of the plant.

The damage caused by Dynamis is often severe and can result in the total destruction of the plant. Visible indicators of infestation include the wilting of the spear leaf, excessive exudation of plant sap from entry holes, and in advanced stages, the death of the crown, leading to the collapse of the tree.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach to reduce population levels and prevent infestation:

• Implementation of pheromone traps to monitor and reduce the population of adult beetles.
• Field sanitation practices, which involve the immediate removal and proper disposal of infested palm trees.
• Use of systemic insecticides, often applied through trunk injections to reach the larvae hidden inside the palm.
• Preventive measures to minimize tree damage during maintenance to avoid attracting the pests.
