Description

The hogweed aphid (Dysaphis anthrisci) is a member of the Aphididae family within the order Hemiptera. This pest is recognized as a significant threat to orchard trees, primarily apple trees, causing aesthetic and physiological damage that affects the plant's overall vigor.

This species primarily targets Malus species (apple trees) as its primary host and various Apiaceae plants as secondary hosts. This host-alternating strategy allows the population to survive even when conditions on the primary host become unfavorable during the peak of summer.

The biological cycle begins with overwintering eggs located in the bark crevices of apple tree twigs. As temperatures rise in spring, nymphs hatch and establish colonies on young leaves, triggering the formation of characteristic leaf deformations and color changes.

The damage caused by these aphids is primarily due to the formation of galls — localized swellings that result from the insect's saliva injected during feeding. These galls often turn red or yellow, and severe infestations can lead to leaf curling, premature senescence, and reduced photosynthetic efficiency.

Effective management requires a combination of monitoring and chemical or biological interventions. Because aphids are protected inside the leaf galls, it is crucial to apply systemic insecticides early in the season before the foliage becomes too severely deformed to penetrate.
