Description
The rosy apple aphid (Dysaphis plantaginea) is a member of the Hemiptera order and the Aphididae family. It is recognized as one of the most destructive pests affecting apple orchards worldwide, causing significant economic losses in both organic and conventional farming systems.
The primary host plant is the apple tree (Malus domestica). However, the pest exhibits a heteroxenous lifecycle, meaning it alternates between apple trees in the spring and specific secondary hosts, mainly plantain species (Plantago), during the summer months.
The lifecycle begins with eggs overwintering on the bark of twigs. As buds break in early spring, nymphs emerge and initiate colony formation. Throughout the season, multiple generations are produced, including both wingless and winged forms that facilitate the spread of the infestation within the orchard.
Damage occurs when the aphids inject toxins during feeding, which triggers severe leaf curling and stunted shoot growth. Furthermore, the feeding activity on developing fruit results in the characteristic "rosy" coloration, reduced fruit size, and significant malformation, rendering the apples unmarketable.
