Pear leaf curling aphid

The pear leaf curling aphid (Dysaphis pyri) belongs to the family Aphididae within the order Hemiptera. It is a major pest specifically targeting pear trees, causing physiological stress and reducing tree vigor. Its presence is a significant challenge for fruit growers globally, as it can cause widespread damage to foliage if left unmanaged.

This pest feeds by extracting sap from the undersides of pear leaves. As they feed, the aphids inject saliva containing chemicals that induce the formation of galls. These structures provide protection for the aphids while simultaneously damaging the plant's vascular system, leading to inhibited growth and compromised fruit development.

The biological cycle of this insect involves overwintering as eggs on the bark and near the buds of host trees. In the spring, stem mothers hatch, initiating rapid asexual reproduction. Several generations are produced on the pear tree before some migrate to secondary hosts. By autumn, winged forms return to pear trees to lay winter eggs, completing the annual cycle.

Symptoms of infestation are distinct and easy to recognize. The leaves curl tightly, often turning reddish or yellowish, forming characteristic galls. This deformation hinders photosynthesis, and heavy infestations cause premature leaf drop. The weakened tree becomes more susceptible to environmental stressors and other secondary diseases during the following season.
