Rosy leaf-curling aphid

The rosy leaf-curling aphid (Dysaphis radicola), belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae, is a significant pest of apple trees. Its feeding activity causes severe structural changes to the foliage, which negatively impacts the overall physiological health and productivity of the host tree.

The primary host for this species is the apple tree. The pest exhibits a migratory life cycle: after feeding on apple leaves during the spring and early summer, a portion of the population migrates to alternate hosts, typically plants from the Lamiaceae family, such as hedge woundwort, before returning to the apple tree in autumn for overwintering.

The characteristic damage is the formation of reddish or purple galls on the leaves. The infested leaves curl tightly, turn yellow, and eventually die. The presence of aphids also leads to distorted fruit development, stunted shoot growth, and a significant decrease in the marketability of the apple yield due to the reduction of photosynthetic area.

Biological activity begins with the hatching of fundatrices from eggs overwintered in bark crevices during the early bud-burst stage. Throughout the season, several generations are produced, allowing the population to expand rapidly. The aphids suck the sap, injecting toxins into the plant tissues that cause the distinctive malformations observed by growers.

Management strategies require a combination of chemical and cultural practices. Early spring applications of systemic or contact insecticides are critical to controlling the initial colonizing generation. Additionally, orchard hygiene, including the removal of host weeds from under the tree canopy and the preservation of natural predators like ladybirds, is essential for long-term population suppression.
