The pineapple mealybug (Dysmicoccus brevipes) is a significant pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. It is widely recognized as one of the most destructive insects in pineapple production globally, known for its ability to cause severe economic losses if left unmanaged.

This insect is a polyphagous pest, meaning it attacks a wide variety of plants beyond pineapples, including coffee, bananas, cocoa, and various ornamentals. Its ability to thrive in tropical climates and protected glasshouse environments makes it a persistent challenge for commercial growers and home gardeners alike.

The biology of the pineapple mealybug involves the production of live young or egg-laying within a waxy ovisac. Development consists of several nymphal stages before reaching adulthood. A crucial aspect of their life cycle is their mutualistic relationship with ants, which protect the mealybugs from predators and parasites in exchange for honeydew, significantly enhancing the survival rate of the colony.

Damage is primarily caused by the extraction of phloem sap, leading to stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and reduced fruit yields. Furthermore, their honeydew secretions promote the growth of sooty mold, which inhibits photosynthesis.
