Description

Systematic position. The Texas mealybug (Dysmicoccus texensis) is classified within the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. It is a significant sap-sucking pest known for its capacity to infest a wide variety of plants, causing economic losses in both commercial agriculture and ornamental horticulture.

Host plants and damage. This species acts as a polyphage, affecting fruit trees, ornamental shrubs, and greenhouse crops. By feeding on phloem sap, the mealybug weakens the plant's structural integrity and physiological processes, often leading to significant yield loss and plant stress.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of the egg, nymphal stages, and the adult phase. Females are typically sedentary and covered in a protective white waxy substance. They reproduce efficiently under warm conditions, allowing the population to build up rapidly and spread throughout the host canopy via mobile nymphs.
