Blueberry mealybug

Systematic position. The blueberry mealybug (Dysmicoccus vaccinii) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. It is a small sap-sucking insect characterized by a waxy, white coating that protects it from environmental stresses and many contact insecticides.

Host plants. As its name implies, this pest primarily targets the blueberry genus (Vaccinium). It can cause significant economic losses in commercial blueberry fields, especially when high population densities are reached during the growing season.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves egg, nymphal, and adult stages. The female lays eggs within a white, cottony ovisac. After hatching, the mobile nymphs, known as crawlers, move across the plant surface to find suitable feeding sites, such as bark crevices, leaf axils, or flower clusters, where they settle to feed for the remainder of their development.

Damage and economic impact. These insects damage plants by extracting phloem sap, which deprives the plant of essential nutrients. Additionally, they excrete honeydew, a sticky substance that promotes the growth of sooty mold, which blocks sunlight and hinders photosynthesis.

• Stunted shoot growth.
• Yellowing or chlorosis of foliage.
• Reduction in fruit size and quality.
• General decline in plant vigor over several seasons.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial for controlling Dysmicoccus vaccinii. This includes strict monitoring of hidden plant parts and the application of systemic insecticides during the crawler emergence stage. Furthermore, cultural practices such as pruning infested branches and ensuring proper plant spacing can significantly reduce the risk of infestation and limit the spread of the pest across the orchard.
