Description

The Spiny bollworm (Earias insulana) is a destructive lepidopteran insect belonging to the family Noctuidae. It is recognized as one of the most significant pests in tropical and subtropical agriculture, primarily known for causing devastating losses to cotton production globally.

The host range of this pest is primarily focused on the Malvaceae family. While cotton is its preferred host, Earias insulana frequently infests okra, hibiscus, and various hollyhock species. It also survives on alternative wild host plants, which facilitates its spread across agricultural landscapes.

Its biological cycle is highly influenced by temperature. The female moth lays eggs singly on the tender parts of the plant, such as squares and buds. Upon hatching, the larvae immediately bore into the plant tissue. Depending on climate, several overlapping generations can occur, making the pest persistent throughout the growing season.

The damage is caused by larvae that feed internally on buds, flowers, and bolls. Infested buds often dry up and shed, known as "flared squares." When larvae attack the bolls, they hollow out the interior, leading to lint contamination and stunted growth, rendering the fiber commercially useless.

Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. Cultural practices such as destroying infested crop residues after harvest and deep plowing help reduce the overwintering pupal population. Chemical control involves the timely application of selective insecticides targeting young larvae before they penetrate the plant tissues.
