Eccritotarsus
Description
Systematic position. The genus Eccritotarsus belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Tingidae, commonly known as lace bugs. These insects are distinguished by their intricate, reticulated wing patterns which provide them with excellent camouflage against the foliage of their host plants.
Target plants. Eccritotarsus species, most notably Eccritotarsus catarinensis, are strictly associated with the water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes). They serve as highly specific herbivores, evolved to thrive exclusively on this free-floating aquatic macrophyte, which often becomes a problematic invasive weed in many tropical regions.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are inserted into the leaf tissue of the host plant, protecting them from predators. Nymphs and adults feed in aggregates on the underside of leaves, and the generation time is relatively short, allowing for rapid population growth during the warm season.
Nature of damage and economic impact. The feeding activity of these bugs causes chlorosis and necrotic lesions on the leaves. By disrupting the photosynthetic process, heavy infestations reduce the vigor and reproductive output of the host plant. This impact is economically significant where the water hyacinth blocks waterways and disrupts aquatic biodiversity.
Management measures. In the context of agronomy and environmental management, Eccritotarsus is viewed as a beneficial insect. The primary goal is its introduction and establishment in areas where water hyacinth poses an ecological threat.
