The rice weevil Echinocnemus is a significant pest belonging to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. This insect primarily targets rice crops, causing substantial economic losses in regions where rice production is the dominant agricultural activity. The primary food source for this pest is the rice plant, with both adults and larvae causing direct damage. Adults feed on the foliage and stems of seedlings, while the larvae are particularly destructive, attacking the root system. In humid rice paddy environments, the population density of Echinocnemus can increase rapidly if left unmonitored.
The life cycle of the Echinocnemus weevil is strictly synchronized with the water management of the rice fields. Adults typically overwinter in the soil or within crop debris.
