Rice root weevil

Systematic position. The rice root weevil (Echinocnemus bipunctatus) is a member of the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as a significant pest in rice cultivation, causing widespread concern among agronomists due to its specialized feeding habits and impact on yield production.

Host crops. The primary host plant for this species is rice (Oryza sativa). Both the adult insects and the larvae pose a threat to the crop, though they target different parts of the plant, which makes the management of this pest a critical component of successful rice farm operations.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adult weevils typically overwinter in the soil or within crop debris. As temperatures rise in spring, they emerge to feed on foliage and subsequently lay eggs, leading to the emergence of larvae that descend into the soil to begin feeding on the root system.

Damage and severity. The damage caused by Echinocnemus bipunctatus is twofold. Adults create ragged holes in leaves, reducing the photosynthetic efficiency of the plant. The larvae, being root-feeders, cause direct damage to the root system, which hinders nutrient uptake and water absorption, often leading to stunted growth, wilting, and significant yield loss.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this weevil. Cultural practices, such as proper field preparation, crop rotation, and timely water management, play a key role. Chemical intervention, involving the application of systemic insecticides, is necessary when pest populations exceed economic thresholds to ensure crop survival and productivity.
