Rose leafhopper

The Rose leafhopper (Edwardsiana rosae) is a significant pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. These tiny insects are highly specialized, feeding primarily on the sap of plants within the Rosaceae family. They are known for their characteristic jumping behavior and tendency to reside on the undersides of leaves.

Host plants include garden and wild roses, as well as various fruit trees such as apples, pears, cherries, and plums. While they can be found in most temperate regions, their populations tend to explode during dry and warm summers, when the physiological stress on host plants is at its peak, making them more susceptible to damage.

The life cycle involves overwintering as eggs inserted into the bark of young shoots. Larvae emerge in the spring as the leaves unfurl and undergo several molting stages. Typically, there are two generations per year in many regions. Adult insects are winged and capable of short, rapid flights, which allows for quick colonization across a garden area.

The damage is caused by the extraction of chlorophyll-rich sap, which results in the characteristic white stippling on the upper surface of the leaves. As the infestation progresses, these spots coalesce, causing leaves to become pale, lose their photosynthetic capacity, and eventually drop prematurely. Severe infestations can drastically weaken the plant and reduce flower production.

• Regular monitoring of the underside of leaves for early larval stages.
• Pruning and destroying infested shoots during the dormant season to remove eggs.
• Applying insecticidal soaps or systemic pesticides when larvae are active.
• Encouraging natural predators such as ladybugs, lacewings, and parasitic wasps.
