Cereal frit fly

Systematic position. The cereal fly Elachiptera bimaculata belongs to the order Diptera, family Chloropidae. It is a well-known representative of frit flies that frequently interacts with cereal crops, playing a role in the complex of pests that affect grain production across various climatic zones.

Crops damaged. This pest primarily attacks various species of the Poaceae family. Cultivated crops such as wheat, barley, oats, and rye are the main hosts. Furthermore, the species successfully develops on many wild grass species, which serve as a reservoir for the pest population, allowing it to survive between growing seasons.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis. Adults emerge in spring when temperatures become favorable. Females deposit eggs on the foliage of host plants. The larvae, which are the damaging stage, bore into the stem tissues of the seedlings, where they feed and develop before pupating within the plant tissues or soil debris.

Nature of damage and harmfulness. The larvae feed on the central leaves and growing points of the young plants. The most characteristic damage includes yellowing of the central leaf, subsequent wilting, and in some cases, the total death of the primary shoot. High infestation levels cause significant plant density loss and uneven development of the stand, negatively affecting the final grain yield.

Protection measures. Managing Elachiptera bimaculata requires an integrated approach that focuses on prevention and timely monitoring:

• Implementing crop rotation to prevent the buildup of pest populations.
• Post-harvest tillage to destroy crop residues where larvae or pupae may overwinter.
• Sowing high-quality, treated seeds to ensure early plant vigor.
• Application of selective insecticides at the early growth stages if monitoring indicates the pest population exceeds economic thresholds.
