Elachiptera pechumani is a species of fruit fly belonging to the family Chloropidae (grass flies) within the order Diptera. While the family is taxonomically diverse and contains many saprophagous species, this specific fly is recognized for its phytophagous behavior, often causing damage to cereal crops in various agricultural ecosystems.

The primary host range of this pest consists of common graminaceous crops, including wheat, barley, and rye. These insects are particularly attracted to young, actively growing stands of cereals. The infestation typically occurs during the vegetative stage, where the host plants are most vulnerable to direct tissue damage caused by larval feeding.

The biological cycle involves the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on the leaves or within the leaf sheaths. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the central stem of the plant. This internal feeding destroys the growing point and interrupts the nutrient transport system, resulting in severe growth retardation.

The characteristic damage symptoms include the yellowing and wilting of the central leaf, often referred to as "dead heart."
