Rat snake
Elaphe obsoleta
Description
The rat snake (Elaphe obsoleta) belongs to the order Squamata and the family Colubridae. It is a large, non-venomous snake that frequently inhabits agricultural landscapes. While it serves as a natural predator of agricultural pests, its habit of invading poultry houses often classifies it as a nuisance or an economic pest within farming operations.
The diet of the rat snake primarily consists of small rodents, which are major pests of stored crops and fields. However, these snakes are notorious for raiding chicken coops to feed on eggs and young chicks. This behavior poses a significant financial risk to poultry farmers, who must deal with both the loss of livestock and the psychological stress caused to the birds.
In terms of biology and life cycle, the rat snake is highly adaptive. They are excellent climbers, allowing them to access lofts, barn rafters, and poultry enclosures with ease. They reproduce by laying eggs in warm, damp organic material such as mulch or decaying vegetation, where the eggs incubate until the hatchlings emerge to begin their independent life cycle.
The harmfulness of this species is largely economic and operational. By infiltrating farm buildings, they can compromise the safety of the livestock and cause significant loss in poultry production. Although they do not directly feed on crop plants, their presence indicates a high level of rodent activity, which is a broader agricultural concern requiring integrated pest management strategies.
Effective mitigation and protection measures include:
- Sealing all gaps, cracks, and crevices in poultry house walls and foundations.
- Installing fine-mesh screens over all ventilation openings and windows.
- Maintaining a clean environment by removing debris, wood piles, and tall weeds near buildings.
- Managing rodent populations systematically to reduce the primary food source that attracts snakes to the property.
