Elasmus

Elasmus is a genus of parasitic wasps belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Elasmidae (often classified within Eulophidae). These insects are recognized as specialized parasitoids that play a significant role in ecosystems by targeting the larvae of various Lepidoptera species, which includes many common agricultural pests.

These wasps affect a variety of crops, including cereals, legumes, and vegetable plants. While they do not directly feed on plant tissues like traditional pests, their presence can disrupt natural pest control dynamics. Depending on the species, they may target beneficial insects or crop-damaging larvae, making them complex agents in the context of farm management.

The biological cycle of Elasmus is characterized by an endoparasitic or ectoparasitic lifestyle. The female wasp deposits eggs on or within the host caterpillar. Upon hatching, the larvae consume the host's bodily tissues, ultimately killing it before transitioning into the pupal stage. This transformation usually takes place inside the host's remains or within a silk cocoon constructed near the site of predation.

However, in cases where Elasmus attacks primary parasitoids that control major pests, it may indirectly contribute to higher pest pressure.
