Garden dormouse

The garden dormouse (Eliomys quercinus) is a small rodent belonging to the Gliridae family. While often considered a protected species in various European regions, its feeding habits in agricultural environments can lead to significant crop damage. Understanding its biology is essential for farmers and gardeners attempting to manage their impact without violating environmental regulations.

This species is highly omnivorous, feeding on insects, eggs, and various plant materials. In orchard environments, it targets a wide range of fruit-bearing trees, including stone fruits like peaches and apricots, as well as pome fruits like apples and pears. Vineyards are also susceptible, as dormice are highly capable climbers that can easily reach fruits located high in the canopy.

The biological cycle of the garden dormouse involves a period of hibernation during the winter months, when the temperature drops. They emerge in spring to feed on buds and young shoots. Breeding typically occurs once or twice a year, with the species showing high adaptability to human-altered landscapes, often nesting in garden sheds, woodpiles, or hollow trees near orchards.

The damage caused is primarily centered on the consumption of ripening fruits. A garden dormouse will gnaw into the fruit to access the sugary flesh, which leaves the produce vulnerable to secondary infections from fungi and bacteria. The loss of harvest can be significant in local orchards, especially when population density is high, leading to widespread spoilage of the fruit left on the trees.
