Description

The genus Empoasca belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. These small insects are highly significant polyphagous pests capable of causing major economic losses to both open-field crops and orchards.

These pests attack a wide range of plants, including potatoes, legumes, cotton, grapes, fruit trees, and various ornamental shrubs. The insects feed by piercing plant tissues and sucking sap, which disrupts the host plant's metabolism and significantly reduces overall productivity.

The life cycle consists of the egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females insert their eggs directly into the plant tissue, such as leaves or stems. Depending on environmental temperatures, one generation can develop in 20 to 45 days, allowing for multiple overlapping generations throughout the growing season.

Key symptoms of infestation include the appearance of white stippling, chlorosis, or the browning and curling of leaf edges, often referred to as "hopperburn." In cases of heavy infestation, plants experience severe foliage drop, stunted fruit development, and reduced vigor. Additionally, these pests serve as vectors for various phytoplasma and viral diseases.

Effective control strategies involve integrated management practices, including weed control, crop rotation, and the removal of crop residues. During high population peaks, chemical intervention using neonicotinoids, pyrethroids, or organophosphates is often necessary, supplemented by the use of biological control agents such as entomopathogenic fungi.
