The Western potato leafhopper (Empoasca abrupta) belongs to the family Cicadellidae within the order Hemiptera. These small insects are known for their pale green coloration and quick, erratic movement. As a significant agricultural pest, they pose a continuous threat to various high-value vegetable crops by extracting plant sap and potentially transmitting pathogens.

Host plants
This species is highly polyphagous, targeting a wide range of host plants across different botanical families. Primary hosts include Solanaceous plants such as potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplants, as well as legumes and various leafy greens. Greenhouse environments often provide ideal conditions for population buildup throughout the year.

Biology and life cycle
The lifecycle of Empoasca abrupta consists of egg, nymphal, and adult stages. Females typically insert eggs into the leaf tissues or stems, providing a protected environment for development. Under favorable temperature conditions, the species completes multiple generations per season, allowing populations to expand rapidly if left unmanaged by agricultural practices.

Damage and severity
Both nymphs and adults feed by piercing the plant tissue and sucking the sap. This feeding activity causes distinctive symptoms such as leaf stippling, yellowing of the margins, and eventual curling of the leaves.
