Green leafhopper

The green leafhopper (Empoasca decipiens) is a prominent pest species belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. These insects are characterized by their wedge-shaped appearance and vibrant green color, which helps them blend into plant foliage. They are highly active, jumping and flying quickly when disturbed, making them difficult to capture without specialized equipment.

This species is a generalist herbivore affecting a wide array of cultivated plants. Major host crops include potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, cucumbers, and various legumes. In addition to vegetables, the leafhopper is frequently found on industrial crops like sugar beets and sunflowers, as well as on ornamental plants and several species of fruit-bearing trees.

The biology of Empoasca decipiens involves incomplete metamorphosis. They typically overwinter as adults in sheltered areas such as field margins, debris, or perennial weed patches. Depending on the local climate and temperature, they can produce multiple overlapping generations during a single growing season, often causing exponential population spikes during hot and dry weather.

The damage caused by these insects is both direct and indirect. By piercing leaf tissues and extracting plant sap, they induce stippling, leaf yellowing, and necrosis, often described as "hopperburn." Furthermore, they serve as crucial vectors for various phytoplasma and viral diseases, which often result in more severe agricultural losses than the mechanical sap-feeding alone.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control. Key strategies include maintaining high levels of farm hygiene, removing reservoir weeds, and monitoring population density using yellow sticky traps. When thresholds are exceeded, chemical control using systemic or translaminar insecticides is required to prevent widespread outbreaks and ensure the health of the crop canopy.
