Systematic position: Empoasca dolichi belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is a common leafhopper species primarily recognized as an agricultural pest in tropical and subtropical farming systems, causing significant economic losses.

Affected crops: This pest is known for its wide host range, with a specific preference for legumes. Key crops susceptible to damage include beans, soybeans, cowpeas, and peanuts. It often colonizes these crops in high numbers, leading to widespread damage if not monitored properly.

Biology and lifecycle: The lifecycle of Empoasca dolichi includes the egg, nymph (instars), and adult stages. Females insert eggs into the plant tissue, usually along the leaf veins. The nymphs are highly mobile and begin feeding immediately upon emergence. Depending on environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity, the insect can complete multiple generations in a single growing season.

Damage and severity: Both nymphs and adults feed by sucking plant sap from the undersides of leaves.
