Description
The potato leafhopper (Empoasca fabae) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is a highly mobile insect that causes substantial damage to a variety of vegetable and forage crops across North America and beyond.
The list of host plants for this species is extensive. Key targets include potatoes, beans, alfalfa, soybeans, and several other legume and nightshade crops. Both nymphs and adults feed by extracting plant sap from the underside of leaves, which directly compromises the plant's physiological integrity.
The insect's life cycle proceeds through egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females insert eggs into the plant tissue, such as leaf veins or stems. Under optimal conditions, the life cycle is rapid, allowing for multiple overlapping generations within a single growing season, which significantly increases the pressure on the crop.
The primary symptom of damage is known as "hopperburn." As the insect feeds, it injects toxins that disrupt the vascular transport system of the plant. This causes leaves to yellow at the margins, curl inward, and eventually turn brown and necrotic, severely reducing the plant's photosynthetic capacity and total yield.
