Potato leafhopper

Systematic position. The potato leafhopper (Empoasca solani) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is a highly specialized sucking insect that causes significant agricultural damage globally by feeding on various vegetable crops.

Crops affected. This pest primarily targets the Solanaceae family, including potatoes, tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers. In addition to these primary hosts, Empoasca solani can inhabit leguminous crops and various common field weeds, which often act as reservoirs for the pest before it moves into commercial fields.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle consists of three stages: egg, nymph, and adult (incomplete metamorphosis). Adult leafhoppers hibernate in plant debris and soil cover. Upon the arrival of warmer temperatures, they emerge to feed and deposit eggs into the leaf tissues. Several generations occur within a single growing season, leading to high population densities by mid-summer.

Nature of damage and severity. Both adults and nymphs feed on plant sap, injecting toxic saliva during the process. This leads to the appearance of pale spots, leaf yellowing, and characteristic curling of the leaf margins, often referred to as «hopperburn». Heavy infestations can severely stunt plant growth and facilitate the transmission of various viral pathogens.

Protection measures. Managing this pest requires an integrated approach to minimize crop loss. Key strategies include:

• Monitoring fields regularly to determine the economic threshold.
• Implementing cultural practices such as weed management to eliminate host reservoirs.
• Utilizing systemic insecticides to control nymph populations before they reach maturity.
• Deep tillage after harvest to disrupt the hibernation cycle of overwintering adults.
