The red leafhopper (Empoasca subrufa) is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. Characterized by its reddish body coloration, this insect is a highly mobile, sap-sucking pest. It is recognized for its ability to quickly colonize agricultural fields, causing substantial physiological stress to various crop species.

This species infests a wide range of host plants, including legumes, various vegetables, and several industrial crops. By feeding on the plant sap, the insect disrupts the normal flow of nutrients and water within the leaves. The piercing-sucking mouthparts penetrate the leaf epidermis, causing immediate cellular damage and facilitating the entry of potential pathogens.

The biology of Empoasca subrufa involves distinct developmental stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Eggs are typically inserted into the soft tissues of the host plant, where they remain protected until hatching. Nymphs, which are similar in appearance to adults but smaller and wingless, feed gregariously on the underside of leaves, completing several molts before reaching maturity.

The primary economic impact stems from the yellowing (chlorosis) and curling of leaves, a condition often referred to as "hopperburn." This damage significantly impairs the plant's photosynthetic capacity, leading to stunted growth, reduced biomass, and lower yields. In severe infestations, the foliage may become necrotic, and the overall plant vigor declines sharply.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as maintaining field hygiene and managing weed populations are crucial to reduce initial infestations. Chemical control should be implemented based on consistent monitoring and population thresholds using systemic insecticides.
