Green leafhopper
Empoasca vitis
Description
The green leafhopper (Empoasca vitis) is a small insect belonging to the family Cicadellidae, order Hemiptera. It is recognized as a persistent pest in viticulture and fruit farming, known for its rapid reproduction rate and the ability to cause widespread damage across various climate zones.
This species is polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a diverse range of host plants. While grapes (Vitis vinifera) are its primary target, it frequently colonizes apple trees, pears, peaches, and various berries. Its ability to migrate between different crops makes it a persistent challenge for integrated pest management programs.
The life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis. Adults overwinter in sheltered areas, such as leaf litter or evergreen hedges, and emerge in early spring. Females lay eggs inside the leaf veins or petioles. The nymphs go through five developmental stages, feeding on plant sap throughout their lifecycle, leading to multiple overlapping generations per growing season.
Damage is primarily caused by piercing-sucking mouthparts. As they feed, they inject saliva that disrupts plant physiology, causing chlorosis, leaf reddening, and necrosis of the leaf margins. This prevents effective photosynthesis, resulting in stunted vine growth, poor fruit quality, and increased susceptibility to other diseases and environmental stress.
Integrated management strategies for controlling Empoasca vitis include:
- Monitoring population levels using yellow sticky traps to determine the optimal timing for intervention.
- Cultural practices such as weed management to eliminate alternative host plants and debris clearing in late autumn.
- Application of selective insecticides when infestation exceeds economic thresholds, focusing on sparing beneficial predatory insects.
- Encouraging natural predators such as lacewings and parasitic wasps within the vineyard ecosystem.
