Empoascanara is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae (leafhoppers). These small, sap-sucking insects are recognized as significant pests in various agricultural systems. Due to their high mobility and rapid reproductive cycle, they can pose a serious threat to crop health in tropical and subtropical regions.

This pest primarily attacks various grain crops, with rice being one of the most common hosts, along with several legumes and wild grasses. Both nymphs and adults feed by inserting their stylets into the leaf tissue to extract sap. This feeding process directly weakens the plant, reducing its vigor and overall biomass production during critical stages of development.

The biology of Empoascanara involves a rapid generation turnover. Females typically lay their eggs within the plant tissues, providing protection for the developing offspring. These transmitted pathogens often cause systemic diseases that can result in total crop failure if left unmanaged.

Effective management of Empoascanara relies on an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. This includes monitoring populations using sticky traps, utilizing crop rotation to break the life cycle, and applying selective insecticides when the threshold of economic injury is reached. Furthermore, maintaining field sanitation by removing weeds that serve as alternative hosts is vital for long-term population suppression.
