Empusa fasciata

Empusa fasciata, commonly known as the conehead mantis, belongs to the Empusidae family within the order Mantodea. This species is distinguished by its unique, elongated appearance and a prominent cone-shaped protrusion on its head, which serves as a highly effective camouflage against dry grasses and plant stems.

From an agronomic perspective, Empusa fasciata is considered a generalist predator. While it does not feed on plant tissues or cause direct mechanical damage to crops, its presence in agricultural fields can be complex. By preying on a wide range of insects, it functions as a natural regulator of populations, although it may inadvertently consume beneficial insects such as pollinators or other predatory arthropods.

The life cycle of this species is characterized by incomplete metamorphosis, passing through egg, nymph, and adult stages. A notable biological trait is that Empusa fasciata overwinters as a nymph. This adaptation allows the mantises to emerge early in the spring, giving them a head start in hunting activities as soon as the weather becomes favorable.

The primary impact of the conehead mantis on crops is limited to its habit of using plant structures as hunting grounds. They remain stationary on stems or leaves, waiting for prey to pass within striking distance of their specialized raptorial forelegs. In some cases, this behavior may reduce the efficiency of other beneficial insect populations that provide biological control against true crop pests.

In terms of management, there is no need for chemical control, as Empusa fasciata is not a plant pest. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies typically favor the presence of such predators as part of a healthy, biodiverse agroecosystem. To maintain balance, it is recommended to avoid excessive use of broad-spectrum insecticides, which would otherwise disrupt the natural predator-prey dynamics within the field.
